Mudstone Studios is owned and operated by ceramic sculptor Ellen Blomgren. She, along with two other teachers, offers classes to children and adults in hand building and wheel-throwing. The studio is equipped with eight wheels and three kilns, and provides all the clay, tools and glazes for every class. Working artists may also rent studio and exhibition space here. Special events include studio and holiday sales and alternative firings for raku, pit and soda.
Affiliated with ProLiteracy America, Literacy Volunteers of Kent County, Inc. (LVKC) is a non-profit organization that provides local residents with adult literacy programs. The organization is comprised of volunteer tutors who work with individuals 18 years of age and older to learn the English language. The service is free and takes place during one-on-one tutoring sessions where the student learns basic reading and English as a second language.
Great Place to Learn offers a variety of services to people of any age. The staff covers all subjects across elementary, middle and high school. Great Place also offers special classes for SAT placement, AP courses and specialized writing classes. It's open after school during the school year and offers tutoring during the summer, too.
